Artist: Daniel Salinas

Materials: balloons, ribbon, dirt

Freedom Balloons is a project that aims at commemorating and giving awareness to individuals who have sacrificed everything to cross the border. These balloons will be a mild commemoration for individuals who we lost in the desert in attempting to cross the U.S./Mexico border. The project will consist of blowing up brown balloons and filling up the house structure. Connected to the balloons will be a ribbon with small bags of dirt weighing them down. The dirt used to fill the bags will be dirt collected from the San Luis Mexico Border. Inside the bag will also be a small explanation of the significance of the dirt and the overall project. Balloons will be given away to spread awareness for the individuals and to commemorate their journey from one home to another.

The Centennial Postcard set questions the idea of tourism and how people see location. By taking stock Google images and labeling them with a location they may or may not be in helps to question the role of place and the role of a visitor in a foreign space. These postcards will be gifted as a take away from the festival and distributed by hand to attendees of the Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival.

Throughout the day, cards containing QR codes will be passed out, each representing one of several instruments in a jazz ensemble. This way, when multiple festival-goers with different instrument cards scan the code, each of their phones will act as a jazz instrument, with the individual tracks blending together into a complete song. An embedded clock in each page will cause the music to play at predetermined times during the festival (ideally between sets on the main music stages), allowing the tracks to be synchronized across all of the phones. Festival-goers will be encouraged to group up and find others with different cards in order to complete the song.

Jazz Hats is a place to express creativity through the construction of a hat. Kids and those young at heart may decorate their Jazz and Blues hats with the materials provided. Materials will vary from preformed paper guitars to crayons. The materials will be safe for all participants, and each creator will be supervised to avoid any mishaps. Construction and decoration of the hats will take place on tables just outside of the structure.

Artist: Darci Niva...

Title: Singin’ the Foreclosure Blues

Artist: Darci Niva

Materials: provided band, paper, writing utensils, kitchen furniture

Among other examinations of the concept of “home” this project is an exploration of the loss of a home. The theme combines the loss of a home with the historic objective of The Blues. The Blues were sung to help people express sorrow, to make the listener feel better, and to tell a story. I propose to work with a small band that is proficient in improvisation. The festival participants will be greeted with a family-styled, kitchen table where they are invited to tell the stories of the loss of a home, whether theirs or someone they know. As they tell the stories key points will be written down and then given to the musicians. An impromptu, improvisational song will be created on the spot and sung by the band.

Artist: Dominika Cosik

Materials: ornaments of varying materials

Festival-goers are invited to create an ornament in the form and style of their choice, but always blue. The color blue will be used as a symbolic commemoration to blues music and its historical context and will be an opportunity for festival goers to interact. Festival goers will also be provided with a small pre-cut material onto which they will either write a favorite inspirational quote or leave a piece of their own heartening advice. These notations will be attached to the ornaments with blue ribbons as a metaphorical offering of encouragement. Once an ornament has been completed with memo attached, festival goers will hang it in a location of their choice for someone to find, trading it with other festival goers, or simply keeping it as a memento. While also including anyone who has ever suffered a “case of the blues”, this event serves as a collaborative tribute to the field workers, who suffered pain and hopelessness.

When Fun Collides is an interactive piece that mixes visuals with music by using both of these elements created during the various musical performances. A computer and camera is used to take live footage of the musicians as they perform, which is then digitally distorted in various ways and projected on the structure. This piece becomes further interactive by the changing of the music and the involvement of audience members detected by the camera. The projection becomes a real time visualizer.
